A few narrow casts were always made first to heat the mold to the proper temp. The mold clamped shut and placed vertical to receive the molten lead from the waiting pot of molten lead, through the mouthpiece directly above the prepared opening of the mold. The paper needed to be wider than the mat and extend beyond the type high bearers. The brown paper strip, taped with brown mailing (paper tape). The mat that had the advertisement pressed into it would be fixed with brown paper strip. Mostly grocery ads for IGA, real estate etc. There is I believe still a Hammond Easy Caster setting in Colebrook, New Hampshire for making the Letterpress Newspaper cast metal. Maybe this is all a mystery to people now, but it was once the daily bread and butter of mainly newspaper printing. I did a time and motion study once in the stereotyping department at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and watched on a number of occasions the rolling of mats, getting them ready, and the casting process on automatic casting equipment. And there was a yearly mat service that shipped a large box of mats for seasonal material that could be incorporated into advertisements. Stereotype equipment is around, there’s even a complete setup here in our town in the back shop of what was the newspaper, and if there was some compelling reason a cast had to be made, it can still be done, even the hand poured method AdLib described but with the casting bars securely clamped to his steel backing surface.Įvery weekly newspaper printed by letterpress had to make castings every week as they received their national and even regional ads in the form of mats that had to be cast. Tom Parsons, who is setting up a letterpress shop in the historic Littleton, Colorado railroad station, just posted some pictures of a shop that was donated to his endeavor:Īnd included in the equipment was a modern, and very nice looking Nolan flat caster, similar to the Hammond Easy Caster, and what appears to be a Vandercook block leveller, and that could be used to surface the backs of cast stereos to type high. :o)Īs to those ready to pounce about the use of chalk plates, well, look to those components. Very attractive, historic, and, properly explained, a source of wonderment to the ‘instant’ ‘puter generation not to mention the polyplate crowd. Should you not have access to proper caster, bobeng, I suggest you shellack the mats, mount them in period frame, them place them in prominent spot on a featured wall. The large size mats described, although I have seen small shops equipped with appropriate-sized manual caster, were more often reproduced via an automatic machine such as those employed by the larger newspapers and typesetting houses. Has anyone wondered why the smaller mats always had a piece of gummed paper tape attached to them? Or how it was a curved stereo (to fit a web press), having minimum distortion, was obtained from a flat forme? :o) A stereocaster is a heated box, of substantial heft to provide suitable ‘heat sink’, having heat controlled according to typemetal composition, and is not a skill easily mastered. ![]() Simply pouring hot metal onto the mat will merely scorch the surface, cool too quickly to allow proper flow - thus inadequate coverage - and should any impression actually reveal, the image will be ‘rounded’ to the point of bare readability. Each ingredient has specific purpose in producing clean, crisp, sharp image. There is a reason for the amalgam of lead, tin, antimony in typemetal. The procedure of pouring hot metal onto an open mat reveals also very limited understanding of typemetal or, for that matter, common lead. (Imagine that weight of the 24x24 mats!) And, depending upon one’s agility at trimming said cast, a router could also aid blemish-free cast by reducing shoulders. (Dilettantes notwithstanding, common three-quarter inch ply was most employed) Or, the mats could be cast type high. Said bars could easily be machined to allow a printer choice of available wood mount. In most of the smaller shops, bearer bars provided accurate height of the casting. :o) Yes, a stereocaster is an essential piece of equipment, but a surfacing machine is certainly not. AdLib’s method reveals he has probably read a brief descript of a stereo recovery but has never actually reproduced same. ![]() It is not the means to an end.” (Part 2). The House is valuable because it is the House. The sight of the One-Hundred-and-Ninety-Second Western Hall in the Moonlight made me see how ridiculous that is. I am reviewing the novel here on ScientificGems because it has a lot to say about Science, Knowledge, and how to relate to the World: “ I realised that the search for the Knowledge has encouraged us to think of the House as if it were a sort of riddle to be unravelled, a text to be interpreted, and that if ever we discover the Knowledge, then it will be as if the Value has been wrested from the House and all that remains will be mere scenery. Some fan art of mine, prompted by the novella Rain Through Her Fingers by Rabia Gale, which is set in a flooded city that Piranesi reminds me of Navy, Auguste Rodin, William Blake, and Ivan Ayvazovsky. Can we indeed live with contradiction? Can the problems of complementarity be resolved? Or is it possible to construct some new synthesis of Science, Art, Religion, and other ways of seeking knowledge? The novel Piranesi raises some interesting questions, but gives no answers, of course.Īrtwork from a Florentine artist, Ryan N. So those are four ways of seeking knowledge. Indeed, former adherents of this approach seem now to be moving towards a new single dominant metanarrative. The result of this is a kind of postmodernist chaos that seems to me fundamentally unstable. Your “truth” may be completely contradictory to my “truth,” but that’s OK. are seen as contradictory ( P versus not P) but the contradiction is embraced. He has picked up some of the fragments and stares at them intently in the hope that they will eventually bring him new knowledge.” P & ~P (contradiction / chaos)įinally, I use P & ~P to reflect the situation where Science, Art, Religion, etc. This puzzles him, but at the same time part of him refuses to accept that the sphere is broken and worthless. The man has used his sword to shatter the sphere because he wanted to understand it, but now he finds that he has destroyed both sphere and sword. Roundabout lie other broken pieces, the remains of a sphere. The novel Piranesi touches on the problems of scientism: “ It is a statue of a man kneeling on his plinth a sword lies at his side, its blade broken in five pieces. This was not intended to be a positive depiction around about the same time Blake famously wrote “ May God us keep / From Single Vision and Newton’s sleep.” I have illustrated this option with the depiction of Isaac Newton by William Blake. It also includes scientism, or the belief that Science trumps everything else (a doomed approach, because the foundations of Science are themselves not scientific they are philosophical and mathematical). This includes the case of religious people who do not believe that observation of the universe can produce valid truth. are seen as contradictory ( P versus not P), but one source of “truth” is seen as superior to, and thus over-riding, the others. I use P > ~P to reflect the situation where Science, Art, Religion, etc. Increasingly, people seem to be fighting against this situation. Art is distinguished from Technology in ways that the ancient Greeks would have found bizarre. The problem with this approach is a kind of fragmentation of life. For the case of Science and Religion, Stephen Jay Gould has called this approach non-overlapping magisteria. I can study the stars, but independently of that, I can also see them as beautiful. They all produce their own kind of “truth” ( P versus Q). are seen as complementary but incommensurable. I use P & Q to reflect the situation where Science, Art, Religion, etc. Perhaps the pinnacle of the medieval approach is the poetry of Dante Alighieri (depicted above), where Religion and Science are combined together with poetic Art. This was a characteristic of medieval thought in Europe, where Art frequently told religious stories, and Thomas Aquinas had integrated Religion with the best available Science of his day. I use the formula P & P to reflect the situation where different ways of thinking – such as Science, Art, and Religion – are all telling the same story, and therefore form part of a grand cultural synthesis. I see four fundamental options, which I list below, and illustrate graphically above (click to zoom). ![]() ![]() Following my review of the book Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, I wanted to say something about different ways of seeking knowledge. ![]() Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Compatibility View as shown in the image below (click to enlarge).Įnsure that the following options are enabled as shown in the image above: ![]() The Local Group policy editor will open up as shown below: Enabling the IE 7 Standards ModeĮnabling the IE 7 standards mode is fairly simple.īring up the group policy editor by typing gpedit.msc into the Run terminal, available from the Windows Start menu. The standards mode is nothing more than running a website in the Internet Explorer Compatibility Mode. There are ways to make the Siebel High Interactivity Client work with IE 9 and higher, however. However, this is not a small or a cheap task. The ideal solution for this scenario is for the customers to upgrade and migrate to Siebel Open UI. While there were ways of installing IE 8.0 on the windows 7 operating system, this doesn’t make much sense, nor is it appreciated by the IT teams in various organizations. The end of life for Windows XP essentially meant that the customers had to move to Windows 7, which never had IE 8.0. Making matters worse is the end of life for Windows XP in 2014, which was the last operating system which had IE 8.0 installed. There are also a fair number of Siebel customers who are still on earlier versions of Siebel (Pre 8.1.1.10), who can only work with Internet Explorer as their browser.Ī paradox arises since Oracle only supports IE 8.0 with the Siebel High Interactivity Framework, while Microsoft ended support for IE 8.0 ages ago. There are very few Siebel customers on an Open UI-enabled version of Siebel, and all versions prior to IP2015 had at least some ActiveX components, forcing the use of the Siebel High Interactivity Framework, which works only with Internet Explorer. New customers deploying Siebel are truly browser-independent, something which has taken a long time coming. As of Siebel 15 (Innovation Pack 2015), almost all of the Active X controls have been replaced by Java scripts as a part of the Open UI enablement. Saying that, the band as a whole ( Barney Such on Drums) and Ross Adams on bass) created an energy that filled the whole room.
